MEE Staff at MS&T 2015

Photographic evidence has emerged of some MEE staff at the 2015 Materials Science and Technology Conference. The photo is of current members and alumni of the Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC) of ASM International.  Ryan and Dan are EPC alumni but enjoyed meeting old friends and  new committee members at the conference. The EPC provides a way for early […]

MS&T 2015

Three of our engineers are currently attending the Materials Science and Technology 2015 Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The MS&T partnership brings together scientists, engineers, students, suppliers and more to discuss current research and technical applications, and to shape the future of materials science and technology. Larry Hanke, Ryan Haase, and Dan Grice are all active in […]

MEE at SMTA International Technical Conference

Three MEE staff members, Larry Hanke, Dieter Scholz and Roberta Rott attended the Surface Mount Technology Association conference this week in Chicago IL. With three of us there it allowed us to always have someone at our booth in the exhibit hall while others could attend technical talks or participate in SMTA committee meetings. SMTA […]

Poetry for the Metallurgist

Sharing a poem that is on the bulletin board in our break room. Composed by R.B.Ross, author of  Investigating Mechanical Failures; the Metallurgists Approach (1995) Rust’s a Must Mighty ships upon the ocean Suffer from severe corrosion; Even those that stay at dock side Are rapidly becoming oxide. Alas, that piling in the sea is mostly Fe2O3 […]

Case Studies

Three new case studies have been added to our website. We think case studies can provide a better understanding of what we do and how we approach typical projects at MEE.  The three newest additions, Leaks in a Fire Protection System. Cracking Capacitors and Fractured Glass Cooking Pot Lid, highlight the range of experience of our technical […]

Metallurgist named CEO of Google

Google recently announced the name of their new CEO and to our pleasant surprise we learn he has an undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering and his Masters degree in Materials Science. Read the article posted by ASM International about Sundar Pichai and his transition from metallurgical engineering and heat treatment processes to the world  of technology.     […]

MEE Heading to SMTA International 2015

Larry Hanke and Dieter Scholz will be attending the Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA)  International Conference in Rosemont IL, September 27-30. Stop by the MEE booth (1023) in the exhibit hall. We will have some interesting and fun stuff on hand to highlight our capabilities and expertise in scanning electron microscopy, chemical surface analysis and broad-beam ion milling. […]

Carburization – Case Study

An interesting new case study has been added to our website. We were asked to investigate the failure of perforated steel plates from a gas-fired boiler.  Initial macroscopic examination  was consistent with a corrosion fatigue mechanism. Further examination using a metallographic light microscope revealed an unusually high concentration of carbides that became more concentrated in a gradient toward the […]

Microscopy and Microanalysis 2015

Last week, Larry Hanke presented a paper co-authored with Dieter Scholz at the 2015 Microscopy Society of America (MSA) annual meeting in Portland, Oregon. The presentation, Microstructure Enhancement Using Ion Beam Milling, was based on work done in our laboratory preparing challenging samples for microscopic evaluation. These images show a gold ball bond on an integrated circuit. In the […]

Forensic Engineering and Failure Analysis

Some of the most interesting and challenging projects at MEE are the forensic engineering cases. Forensic engineering is application of engineering principles to the investigation of incidents that have or may lead to litigation or other dispute resolution venues. Engineers at MEE practice specifically in the areas of forensic metallurgical engineering or forensic materials engineering. […]
