Materials Science Camp 2016

posted June 2016

Thirty high school students spent a day at MEE  as part of a week-long Materials Science Camp sponsored by the MN Chapter of ASM International.  Under the direction of  industry and education based “Materials Mentors”, students got hands-on experience solving a materials failure analysis project. Three on our staff, Larry Hanke, Kurt Schenk and Neal Hanke, were  camp mentors. This was MEE’s tenth year sponsoring the camp.

Shown in the pictures below are students preparing samples in the metallographic lab, viewing samples in the SEM, performing Rockwell hardness testing and consulting ASM handbooks in the library. On the last day of camp they presented a report on the possible root cause of the failure with recommendations for solutions to the problem.

MEE Hires Second Intern

posted June 2016

Welcome to summer intern, Josh Polzin. Josh will be a freshman in the college of engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor this fall. We met Josh last summer when he was a high school senior attending the Minnesota ASM materials science camp. Students spend one day of the camp in the MEE laboratory learning about and using scanning electron microscopes, Rockwell hardness testers, microhardness testers and a variety of light microscopes.  Apparently, Josh liked we he saw here at MEE and talked with principal engineer, Larry Hanke,  about a possible internship.   We were pleased to have the opportunity and resources to hire a second intern for the summer. Working under the direction of a materials engineer, Josh will be testing alternative procedures for cold mounting metallographic specimens among other projects in the MEE metallographic laboratory.

Failure Analysis Group

posted October 2015

A group of ASM members, all involved in failure analysis,  have initiated the process to form a new technical society dedicated to failure analysis and prevention. A leadership group was formed at the recent ASM annual conference in Columbus, Ohio to get this new society established as an Affiliate Society of ASM International.

Three MEE engineers, Larry Hanke, Ryan Haase and Dan Grice have all taken on roles in the leadership group.  This is a new and exciting opportunity to support, promote and advance the field of materials science and failure analysis. Thanks to Larry, Ryan and Dan for all your work on this project.

MEE Staff at MS&T 2015

posted October 2015

Photographic evidence has emerged of some MEE staff at the 2015 Materials Science and Technology Conference.

The photo is of current members and alumni of the Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC) of ASM International.  Ryan and Dan are EPC alumni but enjoyed meeting old friends and  new committee members at the conference.

The EPC provides a way for early career professionals (up to five years post-graduation from a materials science or metallurgy degree program) to become involved with their professional society on a national level. The committee sponsors a technical symposium at the ASM annual meeting every fall.  Both Ryan and Dan have continued their involvement in ASM serving on and chairing other committees on the national and local level.

MS&T 2015

posted October 2015

Three of our engineers are currently attending the Materials Science and Technology 2015 Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The MS&T partnership brings together scientists, engineers, students, suppliers and more to discuss current research and technical applications, and to shape the future of materials science and technology. Larry Hanke, Ryan Haase, and Dan Grice are all active in ASM International, the professional organization for Materials Engineers and one of the supporting societies of MS&T.

mst-15The benefits of MEE staff involvement in professional societies ultimately benefits  the services we provide to our customers. Our November e- newsletter will focus on some of the specific activities our staff have been involved in on the local and national level.

MEE Hosts ASM Materials Camp

posted February 2015

ASM Materials Camp is a four day summer camp for students entering their junior or senior year of high school. It is a unique science experience combining mini-demonstrations, field trips and time in professional laboratory facilities exploring materials science and engineering principles.

For the past six years, MEE has sponsored and  hosted students from the Minnesota ASM Materials Camp for a day of hands-on laboratory experience. The student’s time in the MEE laboratory is spent working in small teams conducting real-life engineering projects including preparation and examination of specimens for microstructure analysis and examination of their samples using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

MEE staff members, Larry Hanke and Kurt Schenk, were two of the principal founding organizers of the Minnesota camp and continue as mentors for the program. Neal Hanke has also contributed as a mentor for the past 4 years. The 2015 camp is scheduled for June 16-19. Deadline to submit applications is March 31, 2015.

More details on the camp can be found at www.mnasm.org/camp
